Some believe the development of increasingly sophisticated image analysis and processing algorithms is likely to lead to the disappearance of the radiologist’s profession because they are convinced that the machine will very quickly supplant the eye’s abilities and that there will therefore no longer be any need for human intervention to interpret images.

The question about whether artificial intelligence and medical imaging are competing or complementary was the theme of a conference organized on May 2, 2018 at the Collège de France entitled “Medical imaging and automatic learning: Towards artificial intelligence?”

Therefore, questions arise regarding the consequences of the development of artificial intelligence on the radiology profession and how to adapt training to new technologies at a time when the profession is facing a demographic crisis. Fears that machines will replace humans run the risk of leaving students unmotivated and encouraging them to move on to other fields. The consequences are especially damaging at a time when the decline in the demography of radiologists in France threatens to disrupt the healthcare system.

Currently, a hospital cannot function without a radiologist. More than 75% of the 10 million patients admitted annually to Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) have an imaging examination. This number is constantly increasing because such examinations lie at the heart of diagnoses.

The vast majority of radiologists are convinced of the help that new technologies and artificial intelligence can bring to their profession, but do not think radiologists as such will be replaced entirely. Artificial intelligence specialists who announce the replacement of radiologists by machines broadcast by the media would do well to realize that a sick human being cannot be reduced to a number of pixels.

The purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate that the fears of diagnostic and interventional radiologists can be allayed as long as they keep pace with technological advances in imaging.
