It seemed Bardenhawk was home to many people who didn’t like taking ownership over their work. Fortunately, now that the officials were motivated, they acted on our proposal to recruit more staff. There were nearly twenty applications for two openings a week later.

If we accepted a lot of people at the start, things would get out of hand, so we decided the best course was to train only a few at first, then recruit more later.

“You could do it, Roland, but you can pretty much do anything, right? So I’d like you to handle the normal work rather than teaching the new people.”

According to Iris, Milia was overseeing the recent hires.

Though the guild management was busy, everything proceeded smoothly.

“What are you here for today?”

A man who looked somewhat like an adventurer, but wasn’t one of the ones I recognized, had come by. I asked him for his guild card.

He was an A-rank adventurer. That confused me, as I wasn’t aware of any adventurers in the Roland gang at that level other than Dey.

“I’m from Bardenhawk originally,” he explained. “I heard about the guild being set up here.”

“I see. So that’s what brought you here.”

“After the demon lord’s army destroyed the duchy, I thought I’d never step foot in my homeland again… Now they’re rebuilding, and I want to help.”

“You’re here to aid your homeland? Truthfully, we don’t have many high-ranking adventurers like you, and it’s given us a bit of trouble. Your assistance is most welcome.”

“Thank you, sir!”

Behind the man, I saw three other members of his party.

They were all born in Bardenhawk and had come with the A ranker.

“I’m afraid we won’t be able to offer the type of payment that you would receive at a Felind Adventurers Guild…,” I told them. Then I presented three vanquishing quest stubs to the group.

One was for dispatching a formidable monster, the next was a tricky magical beast, and the third a swarm of creatures. Each job was A rank.

The rewards were about one-third of what they would’ve been in Felind. I’d done the on-scene investigation for these quests myself, so I explained what to look out for to the men.

The A-rank adventurer seemed unfazed.

“Payment shouldn’t be an issue. Right, guys? You’re good with this?”

“Yes. Actually, the reward seems on the higher side to me.”

“Are you an idiot? It’s cheap. But, well, we didn’t come here for the money.”

“I agree. If we were after riches, we wouldn’t have spent a week traveling here.”

Each gave his opinion in turn.

“…So there you have it. Please leave these to us, sir.”

“Thank you. I look forward to your results,” I said.

“You’re not from the capital, are you, sir?” one of the men asked me.

“I’m not,” I replied. “I normally work at the Lahti branch.”

“That explains it.”

The whole party nodded, looking satisfied.

“You’re very courteous, sir.”

“This is how I normally conduct myself,” I replied.

“We’ll be in hot water if we screwed up after all the info you gave us. It’d call our ranks into question.”

“Ha-ha-ha. I suppose so,” laughed the A-rank adventurer, while I was stuck for a response.
