I WAKE TO AN OVERWHELMING restless feeling. It’s Tuesday, day three of our stay in Gobota Island, and a crippling reminder I’m about to kiss my fairy tale goodbye. I’m not surprised her Alhaji ignored my message. I’ve always known him to be a cocky bastard. His inflated political talk show appearances, banter, and agenda always get me flipping the channel. I don’t understand why the first thing I do upon dressing up for the gym is to check up on the guy. It’s 7 am, yet he has already sent out a dozen tweets, most of which are more hollow promises on his plans to make the country safe for all, and others of his missing a certain someone. While his political tweets got engagements, they didn’t do as well as his hints about his impending marriage and claims of being in love.

I stamp out the irritation his tweets fill me with on the treadmill, push hard on the bench, and eventually yield to the insatiable need to see Jay. A shower and some adjustments to my schedule later, I’m pulling the shuttle out of the driveway straight to her. I’m aware most vacationers at the resort know about Jay’s ties to Senator Ahmed, and I know our being seen together will raise eyebrows, and might put her in an uncomfortable spotlight. Still, I’m sporting for us to be seen. I’m banking on them seeing us. I want the world to know I’m slowly falling for an incredible woman. I pull out my phone and post a ten-picture slide of Jay and me captioned: She’s got me staring. A nasty side of me thought to tag him, and I did. Closing it with the hashtag Marula Magic, I upload the post and get off the phone. Let him feast on that, or jump off a cliff if he so wishes. It’ll serve the world, anyway. Feeling free-spirited, I connect my phone to the vehicle’s speaker, select Lighthouse Family’s High, and sing along.

My mood stays with me when she lets me in, still looking groggy.

“Sleepyhead,” I say when she keeps looking at me with a lost expression. I snap my finger in her face. “Hey, wake up.”

“What are you so chipper about?” She frowns. I chuckle, admiring the cuteness of her ruffled hair, morning face, and glossy eyes.

“I’m probably still giddy from our kiss?”

“Then drink tea or something. I hear it’s relaxing.”

“Or I’ll drink your lips instead.”

Her gaze locks onto me and leisurely lingers, then she smiles. “That’ll work too. I’ve been told I taste like cranberries.”

Giving in to the desire I’ve had since walking into the room and seeing her dishevelled, I take her in my arms and lock lips with hers. Her mouth melts like butter on a hot pan as she dissolves into me and pushes her tongue into mine. I tighten my hold on her, savouring her sweetness.

Knowing we’re only a few feet away from hitting the bed and taking this to a heightened level does
