CHAPTER FOUR

HOODRAT

Abyss, Muffler, and Reno all trail behind me as we blow through to the Finger Lakes. A few days after Boss asked me to set up a run to secure more liquor partnerships, we got word of a few wineries and distilleries up here that would be interested in giving a few wholesale deals for the club. Of course, they wanted to be listed as one of the sponsors.

The Kittens & Claws club is becoming a huge name up in Toronto, and everyone is trying to get a piece of the action that we’ve got going on up there. The ride is long, but it gives me a lot of time to think about what happened that day back at the restaurant.

I thought about trying to find Mrs. Romano and ask her what the note meant, but I figured that was a bad idea if she was doing it so her husband didn’t find out. After I shot down that idea, I start to think about all the DiGiovanni families I know and even some I don’t know personally. None of them have anything to do with Giada. The more I look into any of the DiGiovanni’s I know about, the more frustrated I become.

I need more information. Mrs. Romano could be talking about any fucking body in the world.

“Hey man, I need to stretch my legs. I’m cramping up back here,” Reno says, and I jerk back to attention. I almost forgot that the three of them were behind me. I’m so lost in my own fucking world.

“Shit, my bad. Yeah, let’s pull over right here. It looks like there are a few good places to get something to eat as well.” The four of us pull over, and I stay in the van as the others get up and walk around. I don’t really have a strong desire to look around right now. My eyes roam over the street, and my gaze catches on a street sign. Memories and neurons start firing in my brain as I remember that one of the DiGiovanni’s on my list just happens to have a restaurant up here. Not long after Giada went away, he basically up and moved up here. I thought it was odd, but I didn’t think anything of it, but now that I’m here so close to one lead of many, I don’t think I can sit back and just let it go. I don’t bother to tell the others that I’m leaving. They all went separate ways anyway. I’m sure I’ll be back before they finish eating. In the meantime, I can go check on Luigi DiGiovanni.
