“People have always wondered since the dawn of time, if they surrender will it stop, some tried, some fought, both sides are never perfect, but we soon find that we can no longer hide, history of death and grief, we soon will feel relief.”

he week seemed to drag on for Parker. School was a nightmare. While most students tended to ignore her, there were a select few that consistently stared at her. She heard their mumblings about how she made Kyle depressed. She wanted to shout at them that it wasn’t her, it was a demon but that would not help her cause. Her friends had been a saving grace for her. They ran interference, throwing shade where it needed to be thrown, and just offered her their undivided attention. They had not asked her a lot of questions, which she was thankful for because she didn’t have the answers to anything.

“Parker, are you ready?”

Parker looked up at her mother. She was wearing black dress slacks, with a black and grey sweater. Her hair was down, and up until that moment, she had never noticed how much she and her mother looked alike. Especially, since they were dressed so similarly.

“I can’t believe we’ve been here for only a month and this is the second funeral I’ve attended.”

Sage placed her arm around her. Parker immediately rested her head on her shoulder as a few more tears slipped from her eyes. She was surprised she had anymore tears left to shed, but apparently she did. Her heart continued to break for Kyle and the relationship they never had the chance to continue. Would it have been forever? She wished she could have found out.

“We better get going. I don’t want us to be late,” her mother said with a gentle kiss atop her head.

Parker nodded but made no effort to actually move. The family had scheduled the funeral on a Friday and the school had decided to give approved absences to anyone wishing to attend the services for Kyle. She was thankful for that. Her friends had already told her they would be there. Parker was glad that she would be going with them afterwards. Enya had been the one to suggest a sleepover. Sage had been all for it, thinking that it would do Parker some good to be around her friends versus cooped up in her bedroom crying.

“Come on, my girl. You can do this.”

Parker smiled against her. For as long as she could remember her mother had called her that. It was a term of endearment. She had thought it was original until she visited relatives on the reservation and found out that a lot of people used that phrase. Parker still liked it. It made her feel like she would always be special.

“I hate feeling like this.”

“It will get better,” Sage answered. “I promise.”

“I’m going to hold you to that,” Parker mumbled.

Sage laughed. “Come on, let’s go.”

Parker spent the drive to the funeral lost in her thoughts.
