LATE 1860S

UPPER SILVER, MONTANA TERRITORY

In the blurred, undocumented years before a few ruggedly optimistic prospectors erected the first tentative shacks of the Marysville mining camp, the future town site originally known as Upper Silver was a dangerous, unpleasant place that these tough pioneers took great pains to avoid. Early miners just starting to scratch the surface of the district’s great riches routinely detoured around what was then a large fly-infested swamp of rotting jackstraw and stagnant, weed-choked pools. Heavy snow loads lingered in the big pockets between peaks, generating fogbanks of blinding mists through to summers, when clouds of mosquitoes took over. Deadly vipers and poison-spitting toads were believed to thrive throughout the dank, sodden, high-mountain bowl that, come to think of it, would rate a halfway decent rest and staging camp if it ever got cleared out and dried up. Until that happened, the forbidding swamp would be the last place any human in his right mind would choose to reside.

Except for one strange, enigmatic hermit some called the Watchman.

Who was this odd character? Some say he was evil, the Curse of Watchman’s Roost solely responsible for violence of the past and the powerful supernatural events that linger on the site to this day. Others—like the Watchman himself—claimed he was a guardian against that very evil.
