MATT

Lazy Saturday afternoons were becoming my favorites. Abigail left us alone to do what we wished, and that day it was hanging out with our friends. Brenda hid behind Blake’s shoulder and let out a small yelp. He squeezed her hand distractedly in reassurance even though he was paling. We were sitting in Lily’s living room, eating snacks and watching horror movies. I was on the floor, my back against the sofa between Lily’s legs, Blake next to Lily and Brenda at the end on the sofa. I almost jumped on the spot when another ghost, even scarier than the previous one, appeared out of nowhere and attacked the protagonist. Brenda closed her eyes and hid behind Blake again.

“Her fault. Who stays in a giant creepy-looking mansion with a weird shrink?” asked Lily “They’re bad enough when they’re supposed to help people.”

She continued to snack, dipping her chips in strawberry ice cream, something I had already gotten used to seeing. We all turned to look at her but she remained completely nonchalant while staring straight to the screen.

“Seriously girl, what’s wrong with you?” asked Blake.

Lily snorted. “Ghosts are dead, they can’t do much more than scare people,” she argued.

“And possess you, and hurl things at your head!” complained Brenda.

Lily pressed her lips not to laugh, I fought my own smile. Not because I agreed with her lack of fear of the supernatural, but because I found it hard not to smile when her eyes lit up with mischief.

“Chickens,” Lily muttered.

Brenda huffed. “I ain’t no chicken,” she said and yelped again as the ghost made another appearance. That time Lily couldn’t help a laugh.

“Let’s never do this again,” complained Brenda when the movie ended. Blake and I got up and stretched, Brenda was sitting holding a pillow.

“You said that last year,” said Lily going to the kitchen to wash her hands and serve pumpkin juice for all of us.

“I mean it this time!” Brenda huffed.

“It wasn’t that bad,” lied Blake.

“Come on you guys,” Lily complained while passing the glasses. “Those movies where people get chased by death are far worse. An enemy you can’t see or vanquish is scarier.”

We all had to agree to that.

“So, the Halloween ball is only a week away,” said Lily.

I kept my expression blank knowing why she had started that conversation.

“Yeah, no point in going this year either,” said Brenda with a weak uninterested façade.

Blake nodded in agreement.

“You guys are right, school balls are no fun,” said Lily, fighting not to smile. “That’s why we will go to a masquerade ball in the city.”

Both Brenda and Blake stared at Lily as she got the tickets and hotel key cards out of an envelope that she had ready on top of the fridge. Brenda’s face lit up as she delicately touched the engraved paper, Blake gave Lily a partly embarrassed but happy smile. Lily’s expression was a carbon copy of Abigail’s maternal smile.

“But this is so expensive,” muttered Brenda flushing.

“Actually, it was free,” said Lily. “We did the flowers for the hotel opening of the organizer of the ball.
