Jayden couldn’t run fast enough. She trotted out the back door of the school ready to dart home after detention for being late in the morning.

The sound of basketball pounding on the pavement outside the court distracted her thoughts about Trey and about their delightful yet frightening lunch party at the old Saloon.

She saw Dean, the captain of the boys’ basketball team shooting some hoops by himself. How odd.

She remembered she had date with him last week, well sort of. She told him she didn’t know if she could make it.

Funny.

She thought Dean was more for her type since he was alive and she thought she was alive. Now she knew that Trey and she were more of the same kind.

Yes, a person’s entire life can alter in the course of a week. Just be a few words been uttered. The truth.

She wasn’t who she thought she was.

Now she was afraid to get too close to Dean, lest she reveal her true identity. Now that she knew they were world’s apart.

“Hey, Dean.” Jayden waved as she threw a casual greeting to him, hoping he wouldn’t stop her.

“Hey, Jayde. What up? Where you rushing off too?” He called out from the court, the brown basketball in his hand ready to shoot.

“Gotta go, sorry.”

“Hey, wait up.” He called out.

Oh, no. He’s heading my way.

Jayden fought inwardly to keep her cool, stifle the nerves jumping all over the place. She bit down on her lip. She’d forgotten how uber-cool Dean was up close. He was hot. Back in Buffalo, she rarely had any guys looking at her. Now she had the attention of the two of the hottest at Beckford High.

One dead.

One alive.

What were the chances of that ever happening again?

“Hey, we missed you at the club Friday night.” His smile was smooth and perfect. His hair dark and rugged. He towered over her, much like Trey. He was athletically built too. No surprise there. He was an all-star, in a tiny school in the middle of nowhere. Which surprised Jayden, that they’d even have any teams, much less a basketball team.

“Sorry, I was...” At Beckford Memorial Park with my ghost boyfriend, Trey, about to kick the ass of some older guy who apparently killed me. Only I didn’t know I was dead until he told me. “I was just busy, I had other plans,” she finally told him, steadying her nerves in her jaw.

“Jayden lost her train of thought and felt lame for not coming up with a better excuse. Of course, she’d come up with one later when it was way too late. That was how life worked out some times wasn’t it?

“Oh.” He genuinely looked disappointed.

“Well, um, maybe some other time then.”

“Sure.” “Hey, wanna shoot a couple of hoops?”

“Now?”

“Yeah, why not now?”

Jayden hadn’t been on the court for a while. Not like she really knew how to play properly. But she could really do with letting off some steam—and not the kind that comes out of some ginormous ghostly steam engine, either.
