Samuel

Hunter stepped in front of me when I stepped outside the school, blocking my path to the sidewalk so I could walk home.

Home.

Didn’t even fucking feel like home. Hadn’t since I was thirteen. Something hadn’t gone through on the paperwork Mr. Garner filed to have me live with him, and I was back at my fucking parents, living in hell. Last night had been goddamn torture. They’d forced the Garners to leave my shit on the porch and leave, not even allowing them to say a word to me. And I’d been warned if I caused any more shit at home—like I started it all in the first place—I wasn’t getting out again.

Would have been nice if they hadn’t, but I wasn’t looking to spend the next few years in jail either. I wanted to graduate and get the fuck out of this town.

“You need a ride?” Hunter asked me.

I sighed. “Normally walk.”

He grunted. “Not what I fucking asked, Samuel.”

I cracked a grin. His grumpiness always made my moods a bit better. Hunter’s lips tilted up the slightest bit. “Yeah, I’ll take a ride,” I told him.

He nodded once. “Come on.”

I followed him down to the parking lot. Jaxson and Blaze were mysteriously missing from Hunter’s side, but I didn’t say anything about it. Hunter was trying; I could see the sincerity in his actions. And honestly, I appreciated it. I didn’t know what in the hell we were, but I’d take whatever he was giving. Besides Noah, Hunter was the only person being decent to me.

I didn’t even give a shit that he’d been causing me hell since school started. Shit like that, as fucked up as it was, didn’t matter to me.

I fucking needed people in my corner.

I hopped into his truck and leaned my head back on the headrest, a sigh leaving my lips. A headache had been pounding at my temples all afternoon. I still got them pretty frequently after the concussion I’d gotten.

“You good?” Hunter asked me.

I nodded. “Just a headache.”

“Sorry about the concussion,” he told me. “Headaches are probably from that, right?”

I shrugged. “That or stress or just my bullshit life in general. I don’t know any fucking more these days.”

He backed out of the parking spot. “How bad is it at home, if you don’t mind me asking?”

I looked over at him to find him already looking over at me. “It’s hell,” I bluntly responded. I closed my eyes again, enjoying the A/C washing over my face. “Pure fucking hell,” I muttered on a sigh.

He reached over and gripped my thigh, giving it a squeeze. My dick jumped in my jeans. “How long does it normally take you to get home?”

I snorted. “I take my sweet ass time. They don’t care what time I get in. The less they have to see me, the better.”

Hunter nodded. “Then rest, Sam.” I swallowed thickly. I was rarely ever called Sam. No one had ever cared enough to give me a nickname. I’d always been Samuel. “I’ll find us a place to park so you can catch some decent sleep.
