Dawson

I spooked her, no doubt about it. My cute, shy, oh-so-serious neighbor finally kisses me, and what do I do? I flatten her against the nearest wall, rutting against her body like an animal. Don’t even have a good excuse; my instincts took over. Lara deserves so much better.

Such a jackass. This is exactly what I was scared about with the self defense lessons: something about that girl makes me lose my damn mind. I go pure caveman.

If I’d kept my head, I’d know that Lara would want things to go slow. That she’d want dates and picnics and nights at the movies, slowly warming up to the idea that we don’t have to fight all the time. We can choose a different path. Together.

Instead, I rushed things. I let slip how badly I want her, and she got spooked.

That’s fair. I’m unnerved at the way she rules my body; the constant craving I feel for her. The sheer goddamn hunger. Who wants that?

Moonlight spills through my open drapes, casting a silvery glow over my apartment. It tints the black leather couch blue, and casts weird shadows from the trophy cabinet in the corner. The awards in there are for stuntman stuff mostly, and a few fights too, and usually they give me a little glow of pride, but tonight I feel hollow.

What’s the point in a bunch of stupid awards if I can’t impress the one person who matters most? What’s the point in cleaning my apartment like a madman every few days just in case she comes over, when she’s never once stepped inside?

Blargh. I’m no good late at night: I go all crabby and sour. My normal good mood bleeds away with the sunset.

“Lighten up, jackass,” I mutter to myself, weaving between the sofa and the coffee table to stare out over the city lights. Could switch a lamp on, I suppose, but that wouldn’t go with my tortured idiot vibe.

Tomorrow. I’ll fix things tomorrow.

I’ll take Lara the prettiest bunch of flowers I can find, and I’ll explain to her that we can go as slow as she likes. That I’m grateful for every second I spend with her, no matter what we’re doing. I will prove to my girl that I’m more than animal instincts, damn it.

And if I’m lucky—the luckiest guy on the planet—maybe she’ll give me another chance.

There’s a soft knock on the door.

I stand still for a long moment, back tense, breathing deep. Didn’t even hear the floorboards creak out there. Did I imagine it?

Another knock, even quieter this time. I cross my apartment in five strides and fling the door open.

“Oh!” Lara jerks back, staring up at me with those big brown eyes. The lights are off in the corridor too, and we’re alone together in the gloom. “Jeez, do you have to answer the door like that? You scared the crap out of me.”

I’m lightheaded with relief as I take her hand, pulling her gently inside my apartment. She’s here.
