Where am I going?

Your office placed you so completely in the public eye that there was hardly any private sphere left. This became evident at the time of your severe illnesses, but especially in your difficulties with marriage and family. Many people in our country took an interest in this, and the fact that it touched and moved so many is a clear sign that this area is essential in our life.

With most people you shared a deep yearning for a happy marriage and family harmony. Like so many people today, you went through the painful and difficult experience of breaking up a relationship and beginning a new one, with all of this made even more difficult by the magnifying glass of publicity.

It is not up to us to judge. Jesus said this emphatically: “Judge not, that you be not judged” (Mt 7:1). May we never forget these words of Jesus. With dismay we see how great a longing there is today for successful relationships, a longing for security in marriage and family, and how difficult it has become. You respected the Church’s position in this question, even when it was not easy for you. It is not easy for the Church, either, to find the middle way between the absolutely necessary defense of marriage and the family, on the one hand, and the equally necessary mercy to be shown to human failure and new beginnings, on the other. Perhaps, dear friend, your death is an incentive for us all to make a common effort on behalf of both, in the knowledge that both are necessary and that neither is simple.
