Chapter Nineteen

“Holy shit. That was too fucking easy!” Marcus sped through Wheaton in his newly stolen van.

“We just kidnapped a child in front of hundreds of people,” Jackie said. Her tone suggested excitement, but seeing the little girl bound and gagged in the backseat put a lump in her throat.

“Murder, kidnap, what next? Want to rob a bank? The rules don’t apply to us!” Marcus was high on victory. “Hi Maria, do you remember me?”

The little girl had tears in her crystal blue eyes. She nodded.

“You want to see your mother and Sean again?” Marcus asked with a sinister smirk. The girl’s tears gushed out full stream.

“Marcus, come on, just tell her why she’s here,” Jackie said. “No need to scare her.”

Marcus did not even look at Jackie as he pushed her head into the passenger window while driving. The force was enough to make the window fissure.

“I’m sorry. I should not have second guessed you nor should have I addressed you so informally,” Jackie said in submission.

“Now you know,” he answered. “Maria, we are headed to your grandmother’s lake house. There is something we need that you might be able to help us find. We know that is where your grandmother kept most of the trinkets she stole from Armaros. You cooperate, and we promise to let you go.”

The rest of the drive was silent. Marcus made it to the lake in record time. He wasn’t sure of the address, but knew it sat on the lake and was for sale. Maria shook her head at the first two homes they found with realty signs, and then sadly nodded when they passed the next home along the lake.

The old Victorian looked like an abandoned crack house that once had been quaint. Holes in the roof were patched with thick plastic canvas. Broken windows were boarded up. The lawn was overgrown with weeds and tall grass. It was almost dark. Marcus parked two blocks away and waited for the sun to go down. The night protected him from onlookers. He unbuckled Maria from the backseat and kept her hands tied and mouth gagged. To avoid suspicion he covered the gag with a scarf, making her looked bundled instead of bound.

“Jackie, I have a feeling it’s here and this little bitch is going to show us where,” Marcus said as he carried Maria like a toddler and briskly walked back to the house.

They stepped around to the backyard and walked onto one of the decks. A tiny window that was one of the few not boarded up allowed them a glimpse inside. There was no furniture from their vantage point.

Marcus set Maria on the deck. “Watch her. I’ll case the outside of the house.”

“Of course, Master Marcus. This must have once been beautiful. Looks so odd against all of these other well-kept houses,” Jackie said as she and Maria sat on the steps that led to the upper deck.

“It’s for sale. Maybe we’ll buy it once Master gets back, who knows? No promises.
