CHAPTER SIX

~ An AURA of Safety ~

As Cassius led the group through the embattled city, he simultaneously monitored the orb, navigating around the masses of Omnis that were dropped by the previous LANE pods.

In a twisted miracle, the remaining Omni hoards were clumped together, dispersing farther apart, allowing Cassius and the group to avoid them more easily. "They're no longer breaching the orb," he reported, "The Tree must realize that the carriers are too vulnerable."

Henry replied, "I mean, you've just blown one out of the sky with some rocks. I'd say they're only vulnerable to you, Cassius," he joked, looking back at the group.

As Henry turned, he noticed something peculiar in his peripheral. He came to a sudden stop, and the rest of the group followed suit.

"What is it?" Rowan asked, looking around for signs of danger.

Everyone's attention was drawn to a statue near the entrance of a modern electronics shop.

The group approached the statue. Its face was twisted in a haunting expression of fear and agony. Cassius raised his hand to his visor, scanning the figure, "This is not stone," he said, "It is a synthetic material of which I do not recognize. The Tree must have punished this person for not submitting to its authority."

As they moved closer to the entrance of the electronics store, they realized that the statue was not alone. More bodies were inside, all frozen in various poses of fear and terror. Their clothes were still cloth, hanging off their hardened bodies as if they were modeling mannequins.

Amara gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. "What kind of weapon could have done this? This is… this is inhuman. No wonder we haven’t found anyone!"

Cassius looked around, his visor scanning the area for any sign of the Tree or its operatives, but there was nothing. "We need to be careful," he warned, "There may still be danger here. This is proving more perilous than I had considered."

The group stepped inside the store, their footsteps crunching over broken glass. The building used to be filled with the latest gadgets and innovative technology, from augmented reality headsets to quantum computing devices. But the gleaming displays were empty, now marred by the horrifying sight of more frozen bodies scattered throughout the store like macabre sculptures.

Wesley pointed to a group of the stone-like bodies huddled together in the corner, seemingly caught in the midst of a desperate struggle. "This is wild, they were scared for their lives, and now they're... like this."

A woman was frozen in a position of reaching out for help; her fingers extended as if to grasp at some unseen savior. A man lay contorted on the ground, his face twisted in agony as if he had been struck by a sudden and inexplicable pain.

Isaac shook his head in disbelief. "I can't even begin to imagine what kind of technology could do this."

In a sudden realization, Isaac's gaze shifted toward Amara and Maya. His words caught in his throat as he struggled to articulate the dreadful thought that had crossed his mind.
