CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

The Huntress of Miami Beach

Demitra Blanchard sat quietly in the family vault underneath the kitchen. The vault was where all the family’s magical books, potions, and ingredients were stored. It was a secret room, known only by the family. Accessed by lifting the stair treads of the kitchen stairs into the air, a hidden latch and pin system suspended the stair treads in place, revealing a second staircase leading down to the secret room beneath the kitchen floor.

Demitra situated herself at a small white square table with a padded wooden chair. Brushing her hand over the tabletop to clear away the debris of herbs from someone’s last spell, she folded her hands and closed her eyes in concentration. She needed to mentally reach her sister by performing what the family called a thread. She was not quite sure if this would work or not. Typically, a thread was performed with several family members participating as the person performing the thread linked her soul to the next person closest to her in the family bloodline. In times past this would have been performed by her mother who would have first linked her soul to Artemis, who would then link to Demitra. Demitra would link to Nacaria, then Beryl, then Salem, and so on through the family until all members were in sync in one large bloodline communication. Demitra never tried to thread to only one person before.

She focused her mind on her sister; the way Artemis looked, sounded, laughed. Demitra bent her mind into a circle centering only on all things Artemis until she could feel that special spark which would let her know she had tapped into her sister’s soul. The spark did not come. She could not do it. It was the first time in her life she had not been able to reach her sister. Demitra folded her arms and rested her forehead upon them. She did not know what to do. So much had changed. Too much had changed. Just a few years ago the Blanchards were living a relatively idyllic life. They had not realized it at the time because they were all still living with the curse which had her sister Nacaria banished from their lives except for her shadow on the wall. But looking back, besides that one horrible condition, life was rather easy. Then Salem’s husband and child died, the werewolf Patric came to Daihmler, Atheidrelle Obreiggon set her course of vengeance into action and all hell just broke loose and didn’t stop breaking. Now the family was in shambles. So many dead. So many lost. So many changes. Though Demitra loved the new additions to the family, like her grandsons and great grandchildren, things were never peaceful as they were in the old days. And now her connection to her sister—her best friend—was severed. And Demitra knew why. Because Artemis wasn’t merely a witch anymore. She wasn’t even human anymore. This was why she could not connect to her.
