Soaring Imagination

Marvin picked up the phone before it stopped ringing. “Hey Marvin, it’s me, Oleather. How are things?”

“What’s up, my love? Things are good. How about you?”

“Nothing much going on, just wanted to hear my baby’s voice. I couldn’t stop thinking about you so, I decided to do the next best thing compared to your company.”

“That’s sweet, honey, and coincidentally, you were on my mind too. Oh, by the way, I don’t mind you calling me baby.”

Oleather laughed at his wit, “Funny, Mr. Kenyatta, what were you doing when I called?”

“I just got through eating dinner and was reading the newspaper while the Tele watched me. How about you? Have you had dinner yet?”

“Not yet, but I felt like cooking today, so I baked some fresh rolls, and I am going to make some vegetable fried rice with sweet peas and carrots on the side.”

“Sounds delicious girl, you are about to stir up the neighborhood with that down-home cooking.”

“You are such a first-class flatterer, Marvin.” They both laughed.

“Seriously though, Oleather, I wish I could drive on over for dinner and dessert.”

“Umm-hmm, so do I.”

“Oleather, I have to tell you, honey, I did have the time of my life when I spent the weekend at your house. It was so beautiful; you know what I mean? I can’t remember the last time I felt so whole. So complete.”

“Baby, we are in sync. I know we have confessed our love for each other before, but I know now for sure that I am 100% in love with you, Marvin Kenyatta. When you were here, I had this idea of not letting you leave Charleston; it crossed my mind several times, but I had to put my selfish inclinations on the shelf and let you go back to Houston. I took comfort in the fact that sooner or later, we will be together in the same house with no distance to rob us of our togetherness.”

“You know Oleather, to be honest with you, all along, I knew that there was something there between us. I think, initially and unknowingly, I was in love with the idea of being in love with you. I was in love with the way you talked on the telephone, your laugh, and your feistiness, but now, I guess all that combined with our magical lovemaking, I, like you, am sure, without any doubt, that I am in love with you inside and out. Oleather Ellis, you complete me.”

“Oh, Marvin, you have made my entire life. Have you ever been married before Marvin?” The question seemed to come out of nowhere.

“No, I have never been married, but I was engaged once.”

“What happened?” Oleather inquired rather curiously.

“We weren’t ready.”

“You or her?”

“Us; I say us because neither of us can assume the responsibility fairly. Fortunately, though, we realized that we were not compatible enough to make the big step, and we did it before it was too late. How about you Oleather, have you ever tied the knot or jumped the broom?”

“Yes, as a matter of fact, I was in a marriage for five years.
