Despite the cacophony of voices trying to advise me, I never doubted in my heart what course of action I wished to take. I loved Vladimir, and I loved our baby. I also loved this adopted country of mine, and the opportunities I had to serve its people. My desire was to stay right where I was and form a family with this gentle, patient man whose child I was bearing. I wanted to give my baby that most precious experience of growing up cared for by both parents. It was true that there were many differences between Vladimir and myself, but I could see no good reason why we could not make our relationship last if we both wanted to. I believed my baby had the right to know and be loved by their father. I was willing to take the risk of discovering I was mistaken in my estimation of Vladimir. I did not want to cause him or my baby the devastation of separating them with thousands of miles. I did not believe that was what God would want me to do either.
