Chapter Twenty-Three

Sienna opened her eyes. Darkness was still settled heavily on the realm. She couldn’t be sure what woke her, but she sat up, grateful that for the first time in over a month, she didn’t feel dizzy from the Guardian blood.

Standing, Sienna stretched, testing her muscles. They seemed to have all returned to normal. Wanting to find out if the rest of her was back too, she crept from the cavern, leaving everyone sleeping behind her.

Chaska and the two Wolves who’d been with him earlier had left for the evening, not wanting to stay near a Vamp and a Sage. Not that she could blame them. Their species didn’t exactly have the best reputation for getting along.

A cool breeze fluttered strands of her loose hair, and Sienna turned her face up with a smile. She wasn’t sure she’d ever see the sky again when the councilwoman tossed her into that damn cell.

Closing her eyes, Sienna reached for her power. It wrapped around her, a familiar blanket that had been missing for far too long.

Lifting her hands, she reached for the moisture in the air, calling it down so it fell upon her like rain.

Smiling, Sienna opened her eyes and turned her head up to the sky as drops fell from above, splattering on her face and arms. It felt good.

“So, are you the one to blame for all the storms lately?”

She jumped, having been so wrapped in herself that she hadn’t heard him approach. The moon barely offered enough light for her to make out his face, and Sienna turned away quickly, not wanting to get lost in his eyes. “No, as a matter of fact, I haven’t been. Guardian blood dampening my power and all that.”

“It was a joke, Sienna.” Daxon stepped out of the cavern and into her storm. “Feeling better?”

“The Guardian taint is out of me.” She’d chosen the word specifically for his benefit.

It didn’t have the desired effect.

“Glad to hear it. I missed the way your eyes light up when you’re using magick.”

“What do you want?”

“I thought I made that clear.” He stepped toward her, eyes dark with want, and Sienna swallowed hard.

“And I thought I made myself clear. I’m not interested.”

He stepped closer. “Is that why your lips are parted? Why you can’t take your eyes off me?”

Her breath hitched as he continued to stalk toward her. Sienna didn’t move. Instead, she called upon the elements, making the rain hammer down upon them. Lightning split the sky, and thunder boomed around them, the storm growing just as the one inside of her did.

“You have no idea what it did to me,” he said.

Sienna straightened, trying like hell to keep from running into his arms. No, this can’t be happening. Everything could be lost tomorrow. With them going into Cambria, there was no telling what might happen. They could all die. “What? To threaten me? How did that feel? That you made the white-haired assassin cry? The battle Sage with a reputation for leaving no
