A Bad Dream of the Distant Past

Lying in bed beside my husband, my mind starts to wander to the events of the day. The debris flying on the boardwalk. The screams. My fear for my family.

Then the beach and boardwalk are gone and I am in a familiar place that I swear I’ve never been before. It is a place that I have seen again and again in my dreams, but that never feels right.

A forest of strange reddish trees covers a hillside. Wraparound windows allow red light into a futuristic house. There are storm clouds in the sky and when I look up there are big things moving within those clouds. Like serpents or squids. One of them breaks through the cloud bank, streaming smoke from its metal hull as it burns and descends towards a distant city. Beams of violet light shoot up at it, but I can see it is too late. The ship crashes into the city and the futuristic towers disintegrate in fire.

The building shakes from the distant detonation and someone lifts me off the floor and into their arms.

“They are coming,” I hear a man’s voice near my ear. “We have to get Syreena to the accelerator.”

“You don’t even know that it will work,” says a woman.

They seem to be giants compared to me. A man and a woman. Their faces drawn with worry. Their eyes like mine. Their faces like mine.

Another ship emerges from the clouds, different and sleeker, coming towards this house. I’m being carried away from the windows. Towards somewhere that will take me from this place. That will take me away before the world ends. I hear the roar of engines. The zap of energy weapons firing.

And screams.

I sit up in my bed in New Metro City.

“S’alright?” mutters Timothy, stirring beside me.

“Yeah, it’s fine, go back to sleep,” I say. He grunts and turns over onto his side. After a moment, I hear him snoring. But I can’t go back to sleep. That dream or a version of it has recurred to me dozens of times throughout my life. Never so vivid.

I scoop my phone off the nightstand and stagger into the kitchen. Almost two in the morning. But not even midnight in Alliance, Nebraska.

Mom picks up after only two rings, but I hear the sleep in her voice, “M’hello? Diana? Everything alright?”

“It… it happened again mom,” I whisper. “The dream. I saw their faces this time. And they said a name.”

“What… you’re sure? I see faces in my dreams all the time.”

“They looked like me,” I say, lowering my voice more. “It was them, mom. It was my family. And they called me Syreena.”

“Mmmmm.” I hear her shifting as she gets out of bed and moves somewhere else. “It could all be your imagination.”

“You could never explain that weird metal that was on the ground where you found me,” I remind her. “Dad showed me pieces of it in the garage. It was like plastic but metallic. What if I came from that place? What if… what if I came from another planet?”

There is a long silence.
