Sybil didn’t know how much time had passed nor the direction they went. At some point, Damian’s questions had stopped and she was no longer certain that he was still with her. The thought that he had been taken away or, worse, killed sent old chills down her spine. Twice, one of the men holding her elbow had picked her up and carried her over some stretch of terrain. She had only been certain that he was walking uphill and stepping over something . . . boulders perhaps . . . the second time.

Her feet and legs ached long before the sounds around them changed. The relative silence, save for rustling clothes and men grunting with exertion, broken only by the occasional bird call was shattered with the sound of many voices in a low murmur. The sound of steel being sharpened caught her ear and creaking sounds that put her in mind of rope straining to lift a heavy burden. Dogs barked and horses nickered. The smell of cooking fires and roasting meat reached her making her stomach rumble with hunger pangs. Then she heard softer noises, higher pitched than men’s voices . . . Women?

A baby’s cry split the air and she stumbled. If only she could see what was happening. Where had these strangers brought her? Was Damian still with her? She licked her lips wishing she had the power to call for him.

Then, she was guided in a different direction. She heard taut fabric being loosened, the sound of it flapping in the wind. The dying grass beneath her feet changed to smooth dirt and then to something else. Woven fabric. Rugs? A luxury to be certain.

Hands directed her forward a few more steps and then abruptly loosened their grip. She swayed, but managed to keep from stumbling. There was more rustling cloth, and then the blindfold was removed. Sybil opened her eyes only to blink and raise a hand as she turned her face away from the brightness of a blazing lantern. She blinked rapidly until her gaze fell on the person directly to her right. Damian!

He was looking down at her, relief shining in his eyes. Sybil’s lips parted in a silent cry and threw her arms around him. Damian grunted and after a moment his hands tentatively came to rest on her back.

The sound of a clearing throat made the blood rush to Sybil’s cheeks, and Damian abruptly stepped back. However, she kept hold of his sleeve as they both turned to face the intruder. Sybil’s eyes darted around the tent. It was made of simple undyed cloth, but the thick rugs beneath her dirty feet were of finer quality than any she had seen in her lifetime. There was a simple table and several stools scattered around it. Its surface was covered with a map of Taliesin. A man was walking around the table. He was tall, taller than Damian, with a head full of golden hair that shone dully in the lantern light.
