The museum harbor, redesigned in 2005, is one of the most popular meeting places on balmy summer evenings in Greifswald. Sun shines until late in the evening on the meadows along the river bank, where many people have gathered to read, drink beer and barbecue or just to have a chat.

The Pomeranian State Museum is divided into three sections. The classical main building houses collections of Pomeranian geology and state history. The art gallery is built on the foundations of the former monastery. It was designed by J. G. Quistorp, the art teacher of Caspar David Friedrich, and initially intented as city school. The medieval monastery library is reserved for the museum management and special events.
