Arowan scoffed as he tore off a hunk of bread, dipped it in honey, and stuffed it into his mouth.

Just as he swallowed, a commotion ensued at the threshold leading into the wine shop. Alderman Igby appeared in the door, together with the winemaker and a balding, barrel-chested man who carried a knobby wooden staff. Gregar could hardly believe the very men he had just been talking of had arrived as if in response to his words. Surely the alderman and the constable had not overheard him?

“There is your proof.” Igby thrust a long-nailed finger at the three diners. “He is corrupting Gregar, just as his two miscreant friends corrupted and violated Lyrion. I only hope we have intervened before Gregar befalls a similar fate. Constable, seize Gregar and return him to his master, where he belongs.”

Gregar stared, bewildered, as the constable and Igby advanced toward the table. Igby looked determined, the constable somewhat embarrassed. But he did as the alderman demanded.

On either side of him, Arowan and Mulciber got slowly to their feet.

“There,” Arowan said with bitter satisfaction. “What did I tell you? It’s just as I predicted.”

Gregar’s protest died on his tongue when he saw the shiny daggers in their hands.
