BRANCHES SLAPPED AT her face as Cyan plowed head-long through the forest. The sting brought tears to her eyes, but she didn’t stop. She ran until her chest heaved and her sides ached and welts rose on her arms.

Behind her she heard the thrashing and cussing of her captors at they chased her through the woods. She could not let them capture her. Not again. She needed to find a way back to Fossil. And Sutter.

She stumbled over a fallen branch, hitting the ground hard enough to jar her teeth and scrape her palms. She staggered up and onward, her breath coming in short pants. She was so tired; all she wanted to do was lie there and cry, but she must keep going. She must.
