“So, when yawl gone give me some baby grans?” Helen said as she stared at her only child and son-in-law.

“Mama, we’ve only been married eleven months. Don’t you think that’s a little too soon to be trying to have a baby?” Azaria said, not wanting to indulge her mother in this topic of conversation.

Her stomach churned violently and she fought back the acid burning her throat. The smell of the food was making her ill. That was strange considering she didn’t have much of an appetite these days. The bags lingering underneath her eyes told the tale of many sleepless nights.

In the four months following the trouble Malik had gotten them both into, he’d since arranged for Azaria to sleep with several more men. Some of them made her do things she’d never tell a soul. No one should ever have to face the horrors she was forced to endure.

After a while, Azaria learned to stop crying out for Malik. As her prophetic nightmares had predicted, he did nothing to help her. All he cared about was money and covering his own sorry ass. She hated the things he was making her do, but the concept of being broke and desolate scared her more than the twisted depravity of her husband’s mind.

Her mama’s chuckle broke her from her trance. “Baby, it ain’t never too soon when you got a good man like this one in yo’ life,” she said, smiling fondly at Malik.

Azaria knew her mother felt like he was the son she’d always dreamed of having and to tell her of the horrors he put her only child through would break her heart. “Thank you, mama Helen,” Malik said smiling back at her. “We’ll definitely think about trying. Won’t we beauty?” He reached over to caress Azaria’s cheek.

She flinched beneath his touch and plastered a fake smile on her face. What she really wanted to do was start screaming and never stop. It was taking every ounce of energy she had to keep up this facade of happiness. Her only solace, her only escape, was the one person she’d become accustomed to leaning on. Her phone chirped but she ignored it knowing it was him.

“Well, I’ll be glad when ya’ll get started cause’ I

ain’t getting any younger,” her mother said. “Now

let’s eat fo’ the food gets cold.”

Malik clasped her mother’s hand as they prepared to say grace. He reached under the table for Azaria’s and she snatched it away, repulsed by a touch she no longer desired. They hadn’t made love in so long she couldn’t remember what it felt like.

Malik stared at her for a few more seconds and then turned away and began eating his food while Azaria picked at hers wishing she could disappear.
