Chapter 8
Lester got out of the limo at the cemetery. This was perhaps the hardest thing heâd ever done, to bury his only child. Walking up to the site where the casket was being carried to, he nearly took a tumble when he realized again that Les was gone. Never there to annoy him again. How he wished that he could have one more talk with him. One more chance to tell him that he loved him.
He realized this too, that heâd seldom told Les that he loved him. Most of his life, Lester had come to realize, heâd called him dumbass and other such names. Too late he realized that he needed him in his life, if for only making him pissy. And they had had some pretty good fights too. The smile that he felt tug at his mouth was short lived. His son was gone.
Lester couldnât even blame anyone for his death. Les had done that on his own. Heâd taken his gun and put it into his mouth and fired. Lester wondered what his last thought might have been. What Les had thought his father would feel, finding out that his child was gone.
There wasnât any way that he was going to blame himself for this, as was implied by the police every time they came by to check on him. It seemed to him theyâd have better things to do other than to harass him on such an occasion as this.
Sitting in one of the many chairs that faced the casket, Lester looked around. Not many people had showed up, he realized. There hadnât been that many at the church either. He supposed that it was too early for some people, some of the crowd that his son hung out with. Eleven oâclock to those type of people was just about the time they were going to bed.
The minister that heâd hired cleared his throat. There wasnât much he could say about Les. Heâd not known himâmost people that had any kind of decent bone in their body wouldnât have known Les. He wasnât the type of person who would cultivate relationships with people like Lester, a businessman trying to make his way in the world.
However, now he was a broke businessman. And if not for the charity that had stepped in and taken care of the funeral arrangements, Lester didnât know what heâd have done. Buried him in the backyard? Hardly. Actually, he thought that was against the law anyway.
Tuning out the things going on around him, Lester thought of the last conversation that heâd had with the Feds. Theyâd closed down his plant a few days ago, and no one was allowed in the building. It was only a matter of time before they discovered all that was in there. They were waiting on a federal warrant so that things collected would go to them.
He would have left town. His son was no longer going to be dragging him down. He looked at the casket and told it that he was sorry.
