Chapter Twenty-Three

“It was just a compulsion,” Gracelyn said. “I didn’t tamper with her brain chemically, so whatever happened to her, happened on their end.”

“The seizure was caused by something the hospital or shrink did?” Alexi asked.

“Yes,” Gracelyn said. “I didn’t program her mind to implode, I wiped her memories. I don’t have the ability to reinforce it or even get into her mind from a distance.”

Alexi nodded. “I want you to get in glamour and go over to the hospital where she’s presently a guest and nose around. Zoe will send someone with you.”

Gracelyn nodded. “Okay,” she said. “It probably won’t be that easy, but we might be able to find something out especially if I can find her doctor. How is it going to help Russell though?”

“Do you think you can penetrate her mind while she’s comatose?”

“Maybe … why?”

“Give it a go and plant new memories,” Alexi said.

“What do you want her to believe?”

“Give her an image of a man who attacked her and Russell while they were talking to White.”

“I can do that,” she said.

“Hanigan was shot, Russell was knocked unconscious by a second person she didn’t see because of a mask, and White was taken by them.”

“I can create that scenario,” she said. “I’ve done it before.”

“Go, then,” Alexi said. “Keep it brief as possible, getting in and out in under twenty.”

“Gotcha.”

They exited her office, and Alexi pursed her lips. Why the hell was she trying to save that damned cop anyway?

Because April asked her to, that’s why. And for all intents and purposes April was family.

The rap on her office door had her frowning. “Come in.”

Slate came in, her expression grim. “Our guy down at the PD just called. Shayna’s been shot. Russell was on scene and is the immediate suspect.”

Alexi swallowed back a curse. “Make sure Shayna has protection if she’s still alive.”

“I’ll get a duo on it,” Slate told her. “I’ve had time to think things through, and I know I won’t be able to do what you want me to when the time comes.”

Alexi gave her a vague smile. “I’ll take care of it myself if there’s a need.”

“I’ve already called in a couple of favors. I’ll have the answers I need within a few days or less.”

“Keep me informed,” Alexi said.

“I’m sorry.”

“I hired her not you,” Alexi said. “Just make sure she doesn’t become a problem. What she doesn’t know could save her life.”

“You’d just let her walk?”

“If she doesn’t know anything, there isn’t any reason to kill her, Slate. Otherwise, I have to protect the family.”

“The family?”

“Us. You. Me. The people who work for me.”

Slate gave her a faint smile. “Thanks.”

Alexi rose and rounded her desk and went to give Slate a hug. “Come on, now. Don’t go getting all sentimental.”

Slate laughed nervously and Alexi hugged her again. “You’re just a puff ball under all that shit,” Slate teased and backed out of her arms. “I better take care of things.”

“Yeah.” Alexi smiled as Slate left her office. She shook her head wondering what Slate thought she was going to do.
