A half-wall of stones ran around Evil Eye Burials, along with a towering black iron gate, both of which kept the graveyard closed off from curiosity seekers and ghost tours.

Ancient oaks, mystical yews, and weeping willows sheltered rows of raised beds containing the dead, along with centuries-old crypts and mausoleums. Dozens of statues watched us, but not the usual kind. No mournful angels standing guard over the souls here. Instead, there were giant ravens, skeleton grims, and yes, evil eyes.

As per normal, a hazy mist clung to the property and a few ghosts added to the scary movie atmosphere. Some of it was part of the glamour my favorite witch had cast over the place; the rest was real. It had once been a place reserved for those practicing the occult or possessing magic in some form. Not only did its occupants not wish to be placed in Christian holy ground, some preferred to stay anonymous about their abilities, even in death.

A willow next to the towering mausoleum greeted us with a long, rustling curtain of limbs that blanketed a side of the building and flowed down concrete steps leading to the door. Pillars decorated the front and gargoyle statues with open mouths glared at us from the roof. Ghost snarled at them, remembering her last encounter with the one in Shepherd’s Rest, and I couldn’t blame her.

I’d texted Aurora to let her know we were en route and that I meant to interview ghosts but wanted to get her opinion on something else first. I’d filled her in on everything up to that point that Killion and I had discussed concerning the elder and her bag. We entered the outer chamber, making our way past multiple crypts, and she greeted us at the interior door with a frown but welcomed us inside, resetting the wards once we’d passed.

Being behind these walls, under her wards, I relaxed fully for the first time in months. No one could eavesdrop on my thoughts here.

Her home was part atrium, part laboratory, and part library. Rows of shelved books lined the area. Skylights and a single wall of windows allowed moonlight in, giving the space a contented yet mysterious feel. Plants, goddess statues, candles in all colors of the rainbow, crystals, tarot decks, and other divinatory tools covered every available surface.

I’d come to think of this place as another of my home-away-from-home spots.

A fire crackled in the large brick hearth, but nothing bubbled in the giant purple cauldron hanging above it. Water trickled down a stone partition near the floor-to-ceiling window, and light from the dozens of candles around the room reflected in the pool below. As per normal, her work station in the center was covered with bottles, droppers, and copper bowls. An expensive microscope and multiple open books and texts added to the mad scientist vibe.

Ghost bounded toward her black cat stretched out in front of the hearth. She hissed and batted at the dog’s muzzle in greeting and Ghost wagged her tail and started grooming the feline’s fur.
