CHAPTER 14

Jane’s text came in shortly after 9 a.m. I’m free tonight. Any chance you want to buy a girl a drink?

Sorry, I’m washing my hair.

You funny guy. Not.

His thumbs flew over the keyboard. Name the time and place, sugar plum.

Sugar Plum?

I’m trying out nicknames for you.

Keep trying and I’ll see you tonight.

“Yes!” Liam dropped the phone on his desk and swiveled in the creaky old chair. They were finally going to get together, and he couldn’t be more excited. It had been way too long since he’d seen her smile. He turned back to his computer, hoping the hours would pass quickly.

A while later, a knock on the open door to his office alerted Liam to Kevin’s presence. The slim dark man dropped a coffee in front of Liam and sat with his own in one of the chairs in front of the desk.

“Thanks.” Liam sat back in his chair and stretched. “I’ve been staring at the screen so long I think my eyes are crossing.”

“That’s appropriate, Boss Cross.”

“Ha ha.”

Smirking, Kevin sipped his coffee, then placed it on the desk. “Starting next week, I want to shift my hours.”

“Oh, okay.” Liam dragged his mind away from the leasing contract in front of him to focus on his assistant. They’d worked together for three years and had settled into a routine where Kevin showed up at 8 a.m. and left around 5 p.m. Liam usually arrived at the same time but often worked later. “What are you thinking?”

Kevin crossed one leg over the other and adjusted the crease in his trousers. “I’ll come in at seven-thirty and leave at five, except for Fridays, when I leave at two-thirty. I talked to Devi in HR, and she said it’s between you and me what my hours are.”

“I don’t see a problem with it, except for the fact that you hate getting up early.”

The younger man flapped a hand. “I’ll have to get used to going to bed earlier. Just stay out of my way until I’ve had a few cups of coffee.”

Liam wrote a note in his planner for the following Monday. “What’s happening Friday afternoons? You taking a class in Japanese flower arranging?”

Picking up his coffee mug, Kevin rose from the chair and moved toward the door. “More like French patisserie.”

Sipping from his own coffee, Liam watched him leave. Kevin was a dabbler, forever taking classes from salsa dancing to crafting cocktails, usually in a quest to find hot, like-minded men. Baking, though, that was new. For a second, Liam wondered if Jane Beckett would be in the class. He shook his head. She’d be more likely to take a class on knife throwing.

He picked up his phone and opened up the Instagram page for Grand Gestures. He scrolled through photos from different events before finding one from the paintball birthday party. There was the one of him he’d agreed to, but he stopped at one of Jane surrounded by the girls, head thrown back and laughing at the camera. He studied the photo.
