âItâs pretty simple. I walked in on Shelby and Coco Rivelli, the yogi sensation who put the ass in vinyasa.â
He blinked slowly, allowing a slight smile. âIâm pretty sure it isnât pronounced âvinyassa.ââ
âWork with me here.â Her eyes tightened into slits like a dog ready to bite.
âAnd what were they doing when you walked in on them?â
âShelbyâs arm was around Cocoâs shoulders, like this.â She imitated, exaggerating some cozying and shoulder squeezing.
âI can see how that might have upset you.â
Her lower lip trembled, so she bit down on it. âI wanted to kick Cocoâs ass, but I think I did one better by running lipstick down her white Mercedes.â
Nathan unsuccessfully suppressed a smile. âI might have heard about that. I also heard the lipstick streak didnât completely wash away at the car wash, so Coco had to bring it back to the dealer for a deeper scrub and buff.â
âHa! Mission accomplished!â
He let her victory hang in the air for a minute. âThe dealership charged her a pretty penny because they were technically closed due to the order.â
Monica slapped her hands together. âPerfect! I could see the wax in the lipstick sort of glomming onto the shiny new finish.â
He nodded and raised his hands, keeping his elbows tight to his ribcage. âWho knows. More importantly, I take it you havenât spoken to Shelby?â
She lowered her hands to her thighs, her shoulders slumping. âNo. I have some pride too, you know. She might be better looking than I am, but fuck, she acts like she owns the relationship, you know?â
He nodded and sipped his second concoction.
âShe treats me like Iâd be marrying up if I were to be so lucky to become her wife. Maybe itâs time that she looked at me the same way.â
He reached for some cheese, and she followed suit. Nathan wisely let silence surround them, only soft music playing in the background.
Monica settled after a few lingering hiccups, setting the cheese on a napkin in front of her.
âYou donât really believe that youâd be marrying up, do you?â he finally asked.
She slowly shook her hair out of the towel, allowing the long strands to hang over the sweatshirt, halfway down her back. âNo, not really. Iâm more confident now that we have our own law firm, and Iâm not in the closet any longer. The last couple of years have shown me what I can accomplish, and that has been a huge self-esteem booster. But letâs face it, I know Shelbyâs prettier than I am, and she knows it. And sheâs sweet. At least, I always thought she was. Now, Iâm not so sure.â
He nodded, then disappeared around the corner to the laundry room. He returned with a basket of clean clothes. âHere you go. Do you want to put on any of these before we continue?â
âMaybe my bra and undies.â She grabbed the basket and traipsed into the bathroom to add her warm undergarments and tank, then re-dressed in Nathanâs comfortable joggers and sweatshirt. She felt better when she returned to the kitchen.
