“Why do you sign? I thought you weren’t deaf.”

“I’m not. But the Deaf School also for kids who wear hearing aids. Mom and Dad said I have to try the Deaf School for a year. All the teachers and kids there sign, so I’m learning.”

Sign language sounded like a secret code. “Are you making good grades at the Deaf School?” I asked.

Erika laughed. “Yes. And I’m making lots of new friends. It’s pretty cool.”

Slowly, I said, “We could have a Sign Language Club. You could teach me.”

That afternoon, I learned lots of signs. Cat, dog, stealing, book, Mom, Dad and boring. I like “boring” best. To make that sign, you put your index finger on the side of the nose and twist your wrist forward.
