In a twenty-minute video tutorial, an artist with the moniker PhilFTW demonstrated how to use AI art to create an entire graphic novel in less than a day. It seems incredible, but it’s true.

The artist’s real name is Alex Colvin and he’d spent twenty years working in corporate advertising before leaving to work at an indie game studio. When he first started experimenting with AI-generated comics, it was for the sake of the art, not the money. But pretty soon Colvin realized that he might be onto something. He listed his first two comic books on Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform, then prepared to create a whole anthology. In an email, he described the change as long overdue: “I work more and the pay is less, but I never feel shitty at the end of the day.”2

After exploring Midjourney and a few other tools, he had an idea: Could he make his own comic book entirely with AI?

It got better: Not only could he show people how to make original comic books, he promised, but he could show them how to do the whole thing in just a day. The steps involved would take a few hours to do properly, but still — the pace and the quality you can get from these tools are amazing.
