Chapter Eleven

Mina’s mind and heart were still reeling from the kisses she shared with Roman last night. Her mind was ticking a million miles a minute with thirty-nine tabs open, and none of it made any sense to her. All she could focus on was the feel of his lips against hers. The warmth of his tongue when it pushed through the barrier to dance with hers. He’d whispered that he’d held himself at bay with an iron will for years, but that disappeared the night of the fire. It was replaced with other things. Things like fear. Desperation. Understanding. Learning how quickly something you want can be taken away.

The computer screen in front of her needed her attention, but her mind kept drifting back to Roman and how he’d held her last night. Protective was an understatement. Possessive might begin to cover the feeling. She noticed when she was in his arms the bad dreams stayed away. He kept the nightmares at bay with the length of his warm body pressed the full length of hers. How many times had she wished for the same thing over the last seven years? Too many to count. But not like this. Not on the run and as damaged as she was. Roman wanted the old Mina, but that woman no longer existed in this world.

“What the hell?” she asked the empty room, leaning in closer to the screen. Roman was helping Cal with recon on Marlise while she hacked into Liam Albrecht’s office in Red Rye. “Why would he be corresponding with a senator?”

Okay, so maybe it was a senator for the state of Kansas. That would make sense. She opened another tab and typed in Senator Greg Weiss. In seconds, she knew that wasn’t the case. Senator Weiss was from the great state of Maine. She read through some of the emails and shrugged.

“They could just be friends.” While true, something felt off, so she flipped back to the other tab to type in the two names together just as there was a knock on the hatch.

“It’s just me, Min,” Roman called.

He climbed down the ladder with Cal following him. Neither of the men looked happy, and that made Mina’s heart tick a little bit faster. “What?” she asked them as soon as they were standing in front of her. “Something’s wrong.”

Roman raised a brow at her, and Cal grinned. “I guess you win,” Cal said.

“Win what?” she asked, aggravation clear in her voice.

“I told Cal you’d know something was wrong the minute you saw us. Listen, Min, there’s been a problem in procuring Marlise.”

“What kind of problem?” She glanced between the two men, but neither spoke. “Tell me, and don’t sugarcoat it.”

“She was attacked on the way back from the store outside her house yesterday. They took out her guard and went to town on her, but she fought back.”

Mina’s heart sank at the news. “That sounds like Marlise. She was always so quiet and meek, but you knew there was anger simmering underneath.
