Chapter 12

Plans

The next morning, Jason awoke to find only Kleya under his arm. Her face was buried in his arm pit, a strange position she often managed to twist herself into, and she was snoring and drooling—this was a common occurrence. Not once had he found himself groping around for a handkerchief to wipe the goblin spit, still smelling vaguely of last night’s beer, off his arm.

Mara, however, was nowhere to be found, and Jason almost could have believed their orgy the night before had, in fact, all been a dream. But there was a small indentation in the bed next to him, on the side opposite Kleya, and a long blue hair still adorned the spot where Mara had once been, resting her head on his bicep.

Gently, Jason extracted himself from Kleya and padded down the hall. He smelled from the ground floor the tell-tale scent of punsha. Kleya boiled it for him every morning, no matter how often he insisted he could do it himself. She, in turn, insisted he would get the proportions wrong, and he didn’t dare tell her that such a feat seemed impossible: her system of measuring and making the brew seemed to involve grabbing a handful of leaves, grinding them in her fist, and plopping them unceremoniously into a bubbling cauldron.

Today, though, he knew Kleya was still snoring in bed, sticky and exhausted from her exertions the previous evening. Which meant in the kitchen must be…

“Oh!” Mara yelped when she saw Jason. She stood over the cauldron, wrapped only in a blanket, tending it with a long wooden ladle, and Jason noted that her version of punsha had a pungency and spice that Kleya’s lacked. “Did I wake you?”

“No, no, I usually wake up around this time. You’re making punsha?”

“Yes,” Mara said, and brushed a few stray blue locks behind her ear. She couldn’t meet his gaze but she was smiling into the pot, and he guessed she was secretly pleased that the fragrance of her punsha had drawn him downstairs. “Kleya mentioned you like to have a few mugs of it in the morning, and I offered to make some… My village has a special recipe with some flowers I noticed in the woods nearby and… And I wanted to make it for you. To say thank you. For saving me. And… for last night.”

Jason snorted and eased himself behind her, holding her hips. She leaned into him, her tiny body till wrapped tightly in the blanket. She let out a long, happy sigh as he kissed her neck, and then nipped at her ear. She giggled—like Kleya, she seemed to love this. Goblin ears must be extra sensitive.

“I should be the one thanking you for last night,” Jason said.

“What do you mean? I was so awkward and inexperienced. You and Kleya had to show me everything… And I felt like I was butting into your special time together…”

“You just made it more fun. I think Kleya would agree.”

“I’m glad,” she whispered softly.
