“Step,” Theo said, out of breath. “Come on, careful—” He gripped Niklas’s waist like a vise, carrying almost all his weight as Niklas felt for the step and slid his foot onto it.

Theo had only had a single beer, mindful of driving home, but he’d watched as Niklas put back shot after shot, his whole body getting looser, smile getting wider and movements more expansive as the alcohol flooded his system. He’d leaned against Theo more and more, until he was basically draped over him, and Theo had hated it and loved it and never wanted it to end, the feeling of Niklas’s body pressed to his, the scent of his woodsy aftershave and the shampoo he used that smelled like flowers because Niklas was many things, but fragile in his masculinity was not one of them.

Niklas tightened the arm he had around Theo’s shoulders. “S’cold,” he mumbled.

Fighting with his keys to get the right one, Theo just hummed in acknowledgment.

“Warm me up, Theo,” Niklas whined, and Theo dropped the keys.

“Dammit.” It took a minute to figure out how to keep Niklas upright and stoop swiftly to snatch the keys, but he managed it before Niklas’s knees buckled. He had the door open a minute later and bodily hauled Niklas over the threshold.

Niklas giggled, arm back around Theo’s shoulders. “Smell so nice,” he said, and put his nose in Theo’s hair, taking a huge breath.

Theo kicked the door closed with gritted teeth. Niklas didn’t move at first, breath warm against Theo’s scalp, and Theo shut his eyes and prayed for strength.

“Bed,” he finally said, and turned them down the hall.

“Mm, bed. Will y’be in it?”

Theo somehow kept his voice steady. “No, Nik, I won’t be in it.”

“But I want you to be.” He sounded sad, as if confused, and Theo’s heart clutched.

“I’d like that too,” he said before he could stop himself. “But it’s not a good idea. Come on.” He pushed the door open and eased Niklas onto the bed, where he immediately flopped over on his back. Theo knelt to take his shoes off as Niklas stared up at the framework of the iron canopy.

“S’not fair, you know.”

Theo looked up. “Hm? What’s not?”

Niklas propped himself on his elbows and peered down his long body at him. “You. This. The—” He flopped a hand. “You won’t let me have sex.”

“I—what?”

“I got a shutout,” Niklas continued, sounding faintly accusing. “‘An’ I can’t even celebrate. I can’t get laid for my first shutout. Not fair.” He collapsed backward onto the bed, leaving Theo kneeling on the floor and feeling like he’d been kicked in the stomach.

There was silence for a minute and then Niklas jolted upright.

“We should have sex.”

“What?”

Niklas beamed delightedly at him. “S’perfect! I can celebrate with you!”

Theo shot to his feet. “That’s—no. You’re drunk. You don’t know what you’re saying. We’re not doing that.”

Niklas’s face fell. “Oh.” He plucked at the seam of his jeans. “You don’t want me.” His voice was sad and small, and Theo clutched at his hair.
