I’ve lost a game for the second time today and now I have to do the dishes.

My eyes feel scratchy, as if I might cry.

‘It’s okay, Ash,’ Sara says.

But I’m very sad. I don’t think I will ever play sport ever again.

The next day is Friday. I go to school, but I don’t play handball in the morning before class. I don’t play tag at morning tea. And I definitely avoid lunchtime footy. I’m very lucky we don’t have any P.E. today.

‘I’m sorry you’re sad about the footy game yesterday,’ James tells me at the end of school.

‘I’ll be okay,’ I tell James. ‘Tonight, is Friday night footy. Mum and Dad will buy pizza and I’ll get to watch the footy! Friday nights are the best!’
