Chapter 9

Cam

“Oh yeah? Watch me!” Sunny shouts as she chugs a twelve-ounce beer and attempts to walk across the fire pit. Harper and Robbin, her fan club, are cheering her on as if it’s for a Guinness World Record. Charlee and I are sitting on a log, watching the festivities and enjoying the warm fire. There’s a slight cool breeze, but the alcohol is definitely keeping us warm—I know it’s keeping Sunny and the girls warm. I feel Charlee bump my shoulder. I glance, and the fire is bouncing right off her pupils, giving them a reddish-orange glow. I clench my teeth as I ignore the lust clouding over me.

“You rang?” I ask.

She grins. “Shut up. You want to go see who can last the longest in the water?”

I glance up into the dark abyss that leads to the ocean. You can literally only hear the waves crashing into the shore.

“What’re ya? Scared?” she teases.

Yes, yes, I am, but she will not know this. “Don’t be last!” I shout, taking off for the water. Oh, this is definitely the alcohol talking. I turn to see if Charlee’s behind me and trip over a hole in the sand, sending me toppling to the ground.

“Ah!” I shout.

“What happened?” she shouts. I think she’s still running my way.

“Char! Wai…”

“Ah!” she screams as she trips over my sandy body, falling to the ground. My eyes widen as I check to make sure she’s okay.

“Char?”

Silence.

“Char?!” I shout, raising from the ground. I slowly crawl over to check her pulse.

“Holy shit,” I say to myself. I glance back at Sunny, Harper, and Robbin, and they’re still distracted. Quin’s asleep. That seems to be her MO lately. Eat, sleep, drink, delete messages from Eric, repeat. She seems to be having a good time, though.

“Gotcha!” Charlee shouts, tackling me to the ground. She’s straddled her legs around my waist, digging her knees into the sand. “You didn’t think your missed plane prank would have gone unchallenged, did you?”

I swallow my saliva as I try not to think about her body pressed into mine and force an answer.

“Okay, okay, you got me. Now get up!”

“No.”

I chuckle. “I’m serious, Char, or I’m going to hurl all over you!”

It’s literally the only thing I can think of.

“Oh yeah? Then why are you laughing? You’re BS’ing!”

“I’m not!” I shout as I try to push her off.

This girl is killing me.
