SLOANE

DECEMBER

I sat up on one elbow and out of instinct, pulled a throw blanket over myself.

“Josh! Eddie! Hi!” My voice was stratospheric in pitch. They’d interrupted a brain-chemistry-altering reunion make-out session between me and Noah. Noah, who was just in his underwear and looking especially happy to see me.

“Who is this?” Josh asked, cocking his head to the side.

“Um, guys, this is Noah, my…friend from work.”

Noah sat up and extended his hand, all abs and pecs and muscles and yep, raging enormous boner.

Josh stepped forward to shake his hand, but Eddie pulled him back.

“If you think for one goddamn second that you’re putting that mighty sword anywhere near my daughter, you’d best be thinking again, Noah,” Eddie barked. Josh’s eyes lit up as his gaze caught on Noah’s “mighty sword.” He coughed out a laugh, Eddie slapping his arm.

“She’s on pelvic rest, you perv!” Josh shouted, backing Eddie up.

Noah held his hands over his crotch, trying to undo the damage somehow. His kiss-swollen lips did nothing to help the situation. “I, uh, I know. This just…happened?”

Noah looked at the clock. “Um, babe, I think our takeout is probably ready, so I’ll just, uh, head to get that.”

He grabbed his pants and shirts off the floor and scampered off to the bathroom. As the door shut, Josh spoke.

“We just came to bring you dinner and flowers for your trouble today, but I see you’re already getting into your own trouble, baby mama.”

“We said no random dudes, Sloane!” Eddie seethed, his face going our signature family fuschia.

“I mean, he’s not random,” I said, blushing.

Josh looked like he’d swallowed a spider. “Wait. This is Noah? Noah who put you into early labor?!”

“I thought he was in Belgium or some shit!” Eddie cried.

“The Netherlands,” I said, Eddie giving a jerk-off hand motion. Yes, it was beside the point. I went on. “He kinda…grand gestured me and flew back today because he was worried about me.”

“Well, what a fucking saint! He just came back to terrorize you some more and put our baby at risk again.” Eddie threw up his hands. “Has he been checked? Is he clean? He might not be random but you know the fucking rules, Sloane.”

The bathroom door creaked open and Josh called out to Noah. “Noah, honey, when was your last STI check?”

Noah’s face burned bright red. “We weren’t—I’m not—we used condoms in June.”

I put my head in my hands. I hadn’t told Eddie and Josh that we fully fucked in June. I just said we fooled around. This was getting worse by the second.

“Oh God,” Noah gulped. “I’ll be back with our food. You guys want anything while I’m out?”

“We’re good,” Eddie said through pursed lips, keeping his eyes locked on me.

Noah mouthed “SORRY” over Eddie’s shoulder as he headed out the front door.

“Sloaney Baloney, you’d better explain all of what that man just said right. Fucking. Now,” Eddie said, sitting on the couch next to me. Josh pulled up an armchair from across the living room.
