In waking and in dream,
~ Glinda
Letter 27 (1196 Ozy/1880 AD/20 BDG)
Dear Oscar,
The lost tomb in the desert library is now buried. It was not our intention to do so. In fact, we barely escaped the sinkhole the pulled the entire library down. We recovered the rest of the artifacts and materials that we could from that forgotten building.
Twenty-six years have passed since we last saw each other face-to-face. You closed your doors and became the lost legend. I went onward to discover the hidden knowledge that the history of Oz has to offer, and I became a living legend. We should get back together and drop the legend thing and just get lost living...as a blissfully married couple, hand-in-hand. Consider my offer, please.
I heard the cry of the tomb for two months before the expedition. I believed that we had removed all the worthwhile books and scrolls last time. Certainly there were things we left behind, but they were unimportant, or so I thought.
There are strange signs in the heavens. The stars are falling. Two have disappeared. They are simply gone from the sky.
Of singular peculiarity, Wickrie-Kells insisted on joining us. That is strange, considering that she has been distant for a number of years. When the expedition left for the tomb, I intended to go to the library in the desert and gather the remaining items. I did not know then that whatever is sealed inside that tomb wanted us there once again. We prepared for the heat of the desert, and the harsh winds, but we did not prepare for the chronicles of the night.
Simple words cannot describe the intense fear the night brings to the desert so far away from land. If ghosts are real, and I know they are, this region of the desert hosts multitudes of lost souls, terrified and crying for their lives. Even the keening of the sandy mermaids could not drown the undying sound.
I lost two of my girls that first night. During the night they disappeared. When I looked in the Magic Picture later, I saw their bones blackened and burned.
We spent the next night inside the library, where we found hollows in the walls. Hidden scrolls and engraved jewels were discovered. Every part of the library was searched, with the exception of the tomb. No one was to touch the tomb. Whatever voice had called us here across the desert had achieved its purpose. We had no other goal but to return home.
In the darkest hours of the night, I found Wickrie-Kells standing with her hand on the final sealâthe magical mark that closed the tomb for all time. Her hand was glowing, as if with fire. I watched as the words formed whispers on her lips. She called radiance onto her arm.
I interrupted her incantation, and she pulled away. Her demeanor had changed. She saw something that I could not see. Even with my Ruby Spectacles, I did not see what she saw. However, it could have been a trick of the low light.
