Marley listened to Alex drive his car into the carport next door. Heard the door shut, his footfalls on the back steps, the door to his house door open and close. Then she sagged to her knees on the too-long grass before toppling over onto her back. She lay, arms stretched wide, and stared up at the night sky as hens nestled next to her.

With the steep embankment behind her house to block city lights and both neighbors with outside lights off, the stars above were visible.

Why hadn’t Alex kissed her again, properly, after Kenji had stomped inside? That little brush had been nowhere near enough.

It was amazing how different the quick sweep of his lips had been than any other kiss she’d ever received. It was the first time she hadn’t been repulsed. Maybe she wasn’t broken. She’d actually wanted more.

What was different about Alex? He was a gentleman, but more than that. It wasn’t just his large, close family. It had to be his faith. God only knew she hadn’t been exposed to kind men who followed Him before this neighborhood.

What had Alex said? Ask Him. He’d said it with the quiet assurance that God would answer her questions.

“God?” she whispered. “Alex told me You’re good, that You love me and died for me. That You’re not just out to get me like Reverend Smith said.”

What was the song they’d sung last week that Alex had mentioned? Good, Good Father. Marley pulled her phone out of her purse, tapped in a search, and played the video through. Then again. The reassuring words trickled into her thirsty soul. After three times, she set her phone to play other songs by the same artist.

Reverend Smith had to be wrong. He had to be blind to whom God really was... or else using his position to purposefully mislead and control others. That sounded more likely. Because wasn’t it obvious in the night sky that God was loving and good? Wasn’t it obvious in creation? Or how about in the death of Jesus? Why would Jesus give His life for other people if not from deep, deep love?

Memories of her earliest visits to Sunday school surfaced. They’d sang Jesus Loves Me and learned about Jesus blessing the children. She’d learned how the Christmas story led to the Easter story, and that both were about love.

Reverend Smith had come along later. Now, the final chains of his message of condemnation shattered from around Marley’s heart. A judgmental God would not make such a huge, sacrificial overture. But a God of love? He offered a way for messed-up people to come to Him. She only needed to embrace it as she had as a small child.

“Thank You.” Marley looked up into the quiet night. Was that a shooting star or a wink from God?

She’d take it as a wink.
