We all leaned against Jared’s Charger, each of us trying to figure out what Yamuna meant when she’d said “eternity” was the final ingredient. That could mean anything, but I had a feeling it would involve killing some kind of Eidolon immortal.

“It’s obviously vampires,” Arick said as he jumped away from the car. “What else could it mean? She’s been killing vampires until now—so she just needs one more.”

“Maybe,” Jared conceded. “But she’s already got the vampires—if she needed another she would have already taken it.”

I didn’t want to agree with Jared just yet, but I nodded anyway. That problem would have to wait for another day. Keiji crossed his arms, tapping his foot against the concrete out front of Yamuna’s house.

“It could be a witch’s elixir,” he suggested. “Many of those need rare ingredients, and take time to…marinate, so to speak.”

Jared sighed, something that sounded more like a growl. “There’s too much that it could be. For all we know ‘eternity’ is just the ramblings of a psychopath.”

“I don’t think anything Yamuna says are simple ramblings,” I argued. My tone had more venom than it should have, and Jared caught it. So did Arick and Keiji, and I knew Azazel had as well. I looked down at the cat and saw his collar was about to fall off. He scratched at it so I bent down to pull it away from him.

“That won’t be coming off so easily,” Jared said, distracted. As I pulled at the collar it didn’t budge. “See?”

“You’re not going to bother lying now, are you?” I asked. “I’m surprised, I didn’t think people were so capable of change.”

Arick squeezed his eyes shut as I stood, maybe thinking that Jared and I were about to start a screaming match. I’d never been in one before, but I’d never felt so angry before either. At least not while I was in my right mind—and not having visions of Harker.

“You know what?” he said. “We need to talk.”

I resisted rolling my eyes. Jared looked to Arick and Keiji and all he had to do was point in the other direction and they were gone. Neither of them wanted to get involved in this, and I understood why. Still, I wasn’t impressed with how easily they had run off—or how fast.

“I…” Jared began, his face twisting into all sorts of pained expressions. “I am sorry I lied. I should have told you the truth when we first met, but I didn’t think…” He shrugged. “I didn’t think I would be seeing you again.”

I lifted my eyes to meet his gaze. “You didn’t think it would matter,” I concluded.

I hated that I understood that. I hated how I was able to make sense of it, and how it actually managed to take away some of my anger. “You’re making sense,” I told him.

He sighed with a grin. “I always make sense.”

“Not to me,” I said. Finally I averted my gaze, unable to look at him now. My anger quickly turned to guilt, and just a bit of shame.
