In the end, Cam agreed to meet with some of his old teammates at one of the breweries in town.

They ordered an Uber, because Cam never went out drinking without having a designated driver. He had forgone drinking in the past many times to be there for his friends as their DD, and would rather spend the extra money than to ever not be sober behind the wheel.

It was probably the one blessing that came from that damned accident: Cam’s inability to ever be a careless driver.

Which was why when Alaine asked Cam about how they planned to get downtown, he waved the phone in his hand to alert her he’d already ordered a car. Jude chuckled at the exchange and told Cam he had to go back to the bedroom to grab his wallet.

It gave Cam a moment to study the way Jude’s jeans stretched around his legs and over his ass, his eyes flickering up to the tight black t-shirt clinging to Jude’s sides.

“I think he’s sweet,” Alaine said quietly, resting a hip against the kitchen counter as she tracked Cam’s stare.

An icy rush of fear washed over Cam and his heart began to thump wildly in his chest. Cam swallowed hard.

“I don’t know if I’d call him that,” Cam managed in response.

Alaine turned to Cam, her eyes soft but penetrating. She crossed her arms over her chest and nodded in the direction of Cam’s room. “He cares about you. A lot.”

If caring a lot meant having mind-blowing sex on an almost-daily basis, Cam would have whole-heartedly agreed with his mom without a second thought. But one thing Cam knew for sure was that caring about getting off and caring about someone and their well-being were two completely different things.

Cam carded a hand through his hair. “Um, I don’t know about that.”

The tinny chime from Cam’s phone altering them that their car was nearby interrupted the conversation, and Jude appeared in the kitchen at the same time, wearing a leather jacket that made Cam nearly swallow his tongue.

“How far away is the car?” Jude asked.

Cam peered at his phone, trying to push down the uncomfortable pressure in his chest. He studiously ignored his mother’s all-seeing stare, and rubbed his sweaty hand against his thigh. He wasn’t going to think about her words even though they were echoing in his head, too loud for him to forget.

When the little car on the map showed that it had turned onto their street, Cam said, “He’s almost here. I gotta get my jacket.”

Jude brandished Cam’s jean jacket with a flirty smirk. “Done.” He tilted his head to the door. “We should head outside and wait. Sometimes they pass your house and you gotta chase them down like a New York City bus.”

“You boys have a good time,” Alaine said with a bright smile that stretched all the way to her eyes. “And be safe, okay?”

“We will,” Cam and Jude said back in unison.

There was a crisp wind blowing harsh and cold, rattling branches of the palm trees that stretched up high in their front yard.
