The following day, my other sisters, Huang Huang and Keke, came, saddled with two bags of dry, salted cuttlefish prepared by Mama as a gift to Principal Jin. They met us at Sisi’s room.

Keke urged us to stay here. School hooligans were still searching for us in order to take Sisi for a public humiliation. We were not out of danger yet.

Sisi offered to feed them, but they looked to the sky, anxious to be on their way home. Before they went, Huang Huang pulled out a letter of gratitude from Baba to the principal, and a book for me, my textbook.

They left when the sun began its western descent, their slender legs and bare feet carrying them down to the plain, their thinning voices trailing behind them in sisterly chat.
