Chapter 15

“I’m sorry, Walter, I need to have her here tonight. She’s got a lot going on at the moment – there are the few last play dates and then the wedding. She can come to you tomorrow night though.” Charlotte sounded impatient, as though she had a million other things she needed to be doing right at that moment. Come to think of it, she probably did.

“But wouldn’t it be better for her to have the stability of being in a place that isn’t half packed up and full of hysteria?” Walter said. “I won’t get to see Emily this weekend because of your wedding and I really would like to spend as much time with her as possible.”

Charlotte sighed, the sound whooshing down the phone. “I’m sorry, Walter. I’m going to have to go. I’ll ask Emily to call you this evening. Bye.” And she hung up on him.

He stared straight ahead at the wall, the phone still to his ear, as though she might come back. Eventually, he lowered the phone. Charlotte hadn’t said, but he was sure this evening was something to do with the wedding, which was why Charlotte wanted Emily with her. Ugh. He hated this whole scenario. Charlotte was taking herself and Emily steadily away from him. His mother lived miles away. He had nobody.

He picked up his phone again and called his voicemail to listen to the message saved on it. It was Emily saying, “Hello, Daddy! It’s me. Just calling to wish you a nice day. I’ll call you tonight. Byeee.” It was the sort of silly message she often left him when she was allowed on Charlotte’s phone. It was small and childish and he loved it.

There would be no more messages like this when she went to the US. No impulse calls or last minute requests from Charlotte for babysitting. There was precious little spontaneity between him and Emily anyway, but even that would be gone. It would be pre-scheduled calls and short, intense visits. He pressed repeat again.
