Drake knelt beside me, shaking me with urgent desperation. I couldn’t help but smile. I tried to say hi, but my throat was too raw for the attempt. He pulled me up to a sitting position, his arm locked around my back for support. I looked around at the damage and noticed that doctors surrounded Blane, Roy, and Henry. They had turned back to their human forms, and I could tell that they were badly injured.

A body bag was being loaded into the back of an ambulance and immediately my heart sank—Jack.

The blast had killed him. What I had felt hadn’t been in my imagination. The thought that I had actually felt his life force flicker out horrified me.

“We felt the energy surge all the way from town. Cornack will have questions.” I nodded. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted my head after this. After all, Cornack was the pack’s alpha, and could legally ask for my head for killing one of his own.

I wouldn’t take it lying down, though. He had trespassed onto my property to harm someone who was my guest. I would certainly argue that I was well within my rights to protect my home and those who resided within.

“Oh, shit! Are Anna and Niova okay?” My voice sounded awful, almost grated like sandpaper against brick.

“Niova? What in the goddess’ name is she doing here?”

“She lives here.” I ignored how his eyes widened with infuriating surprise and changed the subject instead, “Is Anna okay?”

“She said she felt funny, presumably from the blast, but is otherwise unharmed. Her parents have already taken her home.”

“Shit.” I stumbled to my feet and staggered inside the house. The place was a mess. Glass was scattered everywhere, and several pieces of furniture had been upended by the blast. I crawled up the stairs to the bedroom and pulled myself toward the bed. I knew that I wasn’t exactly showing a picture of strength, but I didn’t care.

I needed to find Niova. I sent my magic out to find her, but my magic was weak, almost depleted. A tiny spark fluttered at my probing magic, and my head whipped up toward the headboard of the bed. I climbed onto the bed and found her wedged between the pillows and the headboard. And she was bleeding.

“Niova!” I gently picked her up and cradled her between my palms. I could feel her life force flickering. She was weak, but still alive. If she had hit anything other than the headboard, I knew that she might have been dead. I released a sigh of relief and held her to my face.

I used whatever reserves I had to gently stroke that flicker back to life. I lightly blew a golden shroud of healing energy toward her and watched as she inhaled it with a harsh gasp; her wings fluttered and her legs jerked. Her tiny eyes opened, but she struggled to focus on me. I gently placed her on my chest and reclined against the pillows. I could only hope that my heat would encourage that spark to grow.
