CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The Past: Facing Demons—and Former Flings

Vega used the address, a map, and divination to locate the party. It was dark when she set out, time enough to gather starlight. She ensured she had fueled her affinity with more than enough magic to cast a portal spell and arrived there safely.

The house was in the Morty Realm, a brick building in a neighborhood with wrought-iron fences and marble sculptures. Loud classical music played from inside.

The night air was warmer than it had been in the Unseen Realm, but that was because she was now in California. She could hear people laughing from behind the house. Ripples of water reflected under the eaves, suggesting there was a pool. Not a good sign.

Sirens didn’t need a river or lake to drown their victims.

The front door wasn’t locked. The house was full of plastic, cold-iron, and electricity. Vega could feel it sapping her powers. She went straight for the backyard, finding several teens swimming. Fortunately, Ruth wasn’t present, and no one looked to be drowned. Yet.

Vega called Ruth’s name. She didn’t know any of the teenagers sharing lawn chairs. Most of them wore orange and white, the school colors of Hannah Walsh’s Hedge Witch High.

Inside, people ate pizza and drank soda. A middle-aged woman with blonde hair stood in the kitchen scooping ice cream into paper bowls. She was dressed nicely despite the apron she wore over her clothes. Vega supposed she was Vincent’s aunt. It eased her mounting worries there was some semblance of adult supervision. Vega shouted to be heard over the classical music blasting in the other room, but the woman couldn’t hear her ask about Ruth.

Vega strode through the rooms, calling Ruth’s name. A hand shook her shoulder.

Vincent stood there, a smile on his face. “You came. I’m so glad you could—”

“Where’s Ruth?” Vega asked.

“It’s all right. She’s with Roberto and Stacy. They’re watching cartoons downstairs.”

“Take me to her.”

He nodded, grinning at her like an idiot. “Of course. Nothing bad happened to her. Roberto is keeping an eye on her.”

Vega didn’t doubt he would. Every young man would jump at a chance to be stuck with a gorgeous goddess. Vincent was Vega’s height and athletic, but Roberto dwarfed him. She hated to imagine him drunk on lust or inebriated period.

Vincent took Vega downstairs. She was relieved to see Roberto sitting on the couch between Ruth and Stacy. There was enough space between him and her roommates it was obvious he hadn’t been molesting anyone.

Half a slice of uneaten pizza rested on a paper plate on the end table beside Ruth.

“Have you been eating pizza?” Vega demanded.

“Vega! You’re here! Yay!” Ruth jumped up and hugged her. “Do you want to watch television with us? I haven’t seen cartoons in years. It’s so fun!”

Vega stared at the Morty screen in horror. “Electronics aren’t good for Witchkin magic. It will drain us.”

Roberto waved a hand at the television and then to Ruth. “That was sort of the idea.”

Could it really be that
