THIRTEEN THE MIRRORED CAVE

With deceptive strength and a sound like creaking crystal, Judge Harker yanked Leo’s arm. Leo yelped as the room spun and the floor rushed up to meet her face. She screwed her eyes shut, expecting a crunch…

But there was none.

When Leo dared to look, they were falling. They had passed through the dusty floorboards of the clocktower and were plummeting down into the frozen ground.

All around them, layers of wormy earth flashed by, striped with veins of stone as they flew deeper. Held tightly by her wrist, Leo couldn’t pull away; Judge Harker urged them onward, descending deep below Otto’s End. Behind them, Leo’s prosthetic leg flew, barely keeping up. It was closely followed by a waterfall of silvery bodies.

The townsfolk were eager to see the killer vampire take her first test. At the forefront of the stampede, Minna was hot on Leo’s heels. She had drawn her poker.

“Where are we going?” Leo tried to ask, but her voice was lost to the rushing earth. She stared at Judge Harker as they went, but the judge didn’t acknowledge her.

For a fleeting moment Leo couldn’t help but feel there was something familiar about this woman—but she couldn’t quite put her claw on it.

There wasn’t time to examine the thought, as they flew through a thick seam of rock and emerged into…

Leo gasped as they came to a halt upside down.

They were in a wintry cavern.

Icicles hung from the ceiling and the floor was dusted with powdery snow. The walls, crystalline-cold and polished to mirrors, stretched out around them before converging on an opening up ahead. Countless years of melting and refreezing had sculpted the ice into geometric shapes, some large and some small, all reflecting the cave back at her.

She rolled, turned upright by a business-like hand on her ankle.

“This is the Mirrored Cave,” Judge Harker said, by way of an explanation. “Welcome to your first test.”
