CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Angus shoved his phone in his pocket before walking into his office. He nodded to Franks. "You ready to head out?"

"Yeah, let me just finish this report. Give me three minutes." Franks pecked away at the keyboard.

"Where are you two headed?" Amy asked.

Angus took a seat at his desk as he answered the detective who shared the office. "Over to interview the best friend of that vic Franks found in the pit. We're hoping she knows why her friend was out near the racetrack or might know of any enemies. As of right now, it looks as if she's the last one to see our vic alive."

"You need help with this one?" Amy asked.

"Nah, we're okay for now. It's been ten months. Everything's gone cold. We're going to be lucky if we find anything to point us in the right direction." Angus pulled a stick of gum from his desk drawer, popped it in his mouth, then offered one to Amy.

"Thanks." She took it. "Did I hear Franks is buying a home finally?"

Franks glanced up. "Got the keys this morning. I'm going to start moving stuff over tonight after work. If all goes well, I'll be out of my apartment by Friday night and staying in my new home this coming weekend."

"That's fantastic." Amy clapped her hands once. "I'll have to get you a housewarming gift."

"You could make some of those frosted sugar cookies you bring in during Christmas." Franks grinned.

Amy laughed. "I didn't know you liked those so much."

"Are you kidding?" Angus laughed. "You know those little gift bags of cookies you give us every Christmas? Franks bought mine from me last year just to get your cookies."

"You can't be serious." Amy looked shocked.

"Honest." Angus held up his hands. "I made five bucks."

Amy shook her head at Frank and sighed. "What color frosting do you want?"

"Really?" Franks' eyes went wide.

"I can't make them until Wednesday at the earliest, but I'll make you some as a gift, and you have to share a few with your partner."

"Make him his own." Franks pouted.

"Who's helping you move?" Angus stared at him.

"All right. You can have one or two." Franks shrugged.

"So generous." Amy laughed. "I'll make some for you too." She shook her head. "My husband is going to hate both of you. He says the cookies are like crack and he's going to overdose on them someday."

"What a perfect way to die." Franks stood. "I'd be happy to die with frosting on my lips."

"You done?" Angus also stood, wondering how the hell he'd gotten such a goof for a partner.

"Yeah." Franks went around the desk to Amy and kissed her on the top of her head. "You're an angel. If your husband ever gets sick of you, you have a place in my kitchen."

Angus's mouth fell open. "Franks!"

"I'm kidding. Just kidding." He held up his hands. "But a woman who bakes like she does shouldn't be offended. I mean, they are kind of like crack. Once you've tried her cookies, you want more.
