CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Lance walked in from lunch and smiled at Kathy at the front desk. "Here's your cobb salad." He set the takeout order on the desk for her. "And a large, iced tea."
"You are a lifesaver. Thank you." She took the drink from him. "It's been crazy today. I swear the phone hasn't stopped ringing."
"I'm glad I could get it for you. Need me to watch the phones for a bit while you eat?" He didn't have to be back to work for another fifteen minutes.
"I can eat here, but will you watch them for a second while I run to the little girl's room?" She was already pushing back her chair.
"Of course. Just answer it Betty's Bra Bar, right?" He grinned.
She swatted his arm. "You're nothing but trouble."
"Don't tell the boss." Lance took her seat as she ran down the hall toward the bathrooms. It had been a long day already. He had two more cases to handle. Thankfully, he didn't have to deal with the most recent murder. His colleague, Sam was handling that one. He'd heard it was bad. Measuring knife wounds wasn't fun. This was one he was glad to pass on to Sam.
He wondered how Angus was doing now that there had been another murder. No one knew if this one was connected to the others, but Lance assumed they were. He'd looked for a ghost when coming to work but hadn't seen any. He wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing. After a death like that, he would hope the person would go into the light and move on to better things. At least he hoped it was better there.
He answered three calls, then went over one of the reports that Kathy had been typing up. The morgue had been busy the last few weeks, on top of the murders, there seemed to be an uptick in cancer deaths as well. Most of those never came through the medical examiner's office, but there were always those who refused to see doctors or those who hadn't known they'd had cancer at all that ended up here. He always wondered what caused those upticks. There seemed no rhyme or reason for them.
Lance glanced up as someone walked in, surprised to see Angus walking toward him. "Hey."
"New job?" Angus eyed the front desk.
"Just giving Kathy a break. Sadly, I figured I'd see you today."
"No offense, but I'd rather be anywhere but here. You doing the autopsy?"
"No, Sam's got this one. I heard it's bad." Lance slid a chair from the backside of the desk so Angus could sit down.
Angus took a seat. "Yeah, it wasn't pretty. Had to be a lot of anger."
"So you think he knew her?"
"Had to have. You don't do that kind of damage unless someone pissed you off." Angus rubbed the back of his neck. "I was really hoping you'd talked to her."
"Nope. Nobody around today. It's been quiet around here as far as the dead go. I talked to Cel last night at the park, but other than her, I haven't seen anyone since Erica.
