Chapter 17

Only Ashley would go about organising his stag do armed with sticky notes and a clipboard. The pub had even let him use their back room since it wasn’t booked, and lent him their flip chart. Jack smirked as Dara raised an eyebrow and asked, “So are we each going to be assigned a colour and name? I’m nabbing Sexy Green if we’re allowed to choose our own.”

Nathan, who had just returned with a tray of drinks snorted. “I thought you disliked the stereotyping of the Irish.”

“I do. Note I did not call myself Sexy Green Shamrock.”

Jack liked them as a couple. He’d met Nathan a couple of times before, and they were so well-suited it was hard to remember they hadn’t been together that long.

“Besides,” said Karl, “code names should be related to your costume. And I don’t know about you I’m struggling to associate green with sexy.”

Val scoffed. “There’s plenty of sexy green things.”

“Trust the gardener to say that.”

Jack watched Ashley roll his eyes and then stare at the ceiling, why he expected anything more from the crowd in front of him Jack had no idea. He sat up in his chair, as best man it was his responsibility to stop Ashley going off on one.

He banged his empty pint glass on the table. “Order, please, gentlemen. Let’s put Ashley out of his misery before his head explodes and we have to explain to Ben we drove him to blow up.”

“Is this what you’re like in court?” drawled Dara. “All authoritarian and bossy?”

“Yes, it’s exactly what I’m like. Now less of the fucking about, as Ashley has had to put up with enough stag do bullshit from his boyfriend, we should at least not be aiming to give him a migraine. Because believe me, he is really pissy when he’s got a headache.”

“Jack!” scolded Ashley.

“Come on, it’s true.” He grinned. “Now, who else wants to be a sexy vampire?”

“I was thinking along those lines,” said Chris, who had sat for the whole evening so far with a hand on Jack’s thigh, which had been more distracting than it had any right to be. “But might instead aim for generic 80s rock star. One of my brothers has a pair of leather trousers and a jacket I can borrow. And I would apply lots of eyeliner, and possibly lip gloss.”

Jack’s brain short-circuited for a moment, and Val let out a dirty chuckle which earnt him a swift elbow to the ribs from Karl. “Ow! What was that for?”

“I’m not built like Chris,” Dara said with a grin. “So to save you all from pouring my bulk into leather, I’m thinking a shell suit and a bad fake moustache.”

“Stay classy, Dara,” Jack said, but wished he’d thought of basically wearing a shiny tracksuit instead of agreeing to wear something in which he’d sweat his bollocks off. “Will you be matching, Nathan?”

“Oh no, I’m planning to go as Adam Ant.”

Ashley nodded appreciatively. “We could do the dance.”

“Or not,” Jack said with a grimace.
