CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

ROMY

Kyoto

Your brain processes information so quickly that it knew exactly where something cute was.

Romy

Yeah *big grin emoji*

My brain is a ‘cute-detector’

Kyoto

It must be hard walking past reflective surfaces then.

Romy

Smooth.

Kyoto

Thank you!

I was honestly a little surprised how the feeling of rejection slid over my skin like a cold rain. It was one of the stranger phenomena about being an omega. The idea of an alpha not wanting you having a physiological effect. Especially because I wasn’t sure I cared enough about Izan for it to bother me.

But maybe it was because I could feel Emeryk’s devastation, and that did bother me. And therefore, Izan’s rejection hurt me too.

It shouldn’t have. By all accounts, I knew it was coming. Maybe not from Izan, but from any other alpha in the world because my role had been predetermined by my designation. Fair or not, that was just how it was.

The way I hurt, though. It was an echo of what Emeryk was feeling. While I trembled from this entire ordeal, I could quite literally feel Emeryk’s heart racing as he tried to catch his breath. Izan was his. Part of his pack that he refused to admit to having. Of course, this was going to wreck him.

And I caused it. That’s why I felt the feeling of rejection as strongly as I did. A member of his pack didn’t want me. Although Izan didn’t say so, when he claimed Emeryk was choosing me over him, that was rejection enough.

We lay on the couch just as Nile said we’d do. The television was on a rom-com and I tried to listen to that instead of concentrating on the mess of emotion inside me. It helped that the packlet and Jen were surrounding us. Emeryk didn’t let go of me. His arms, his hold, was almost painfully tight. Oslo was still pressed against my back. Nile was on one side of us and then Jen was on the other with Kyoto at her back.

All of their hands were on us. On me. Their purring filled my head. Their scents filled my lungs. And I listened to the TV to try to drown out anything else.

After a while, in which no one actually ate anything, Nile said, “You up to talking now?”

I shook my head. The chuckles that followed brought a smile to my face. It grew when Emeryk kissed my head.

“I love you,” he murmured, making my breath catch and my heart jump. “You’re not going anywhere. No matter what else happens around us, you’re mine, Romy. Understand?”

Swallowing around the tears, I picked my head up. “Why did you choose me over him?” I asked, my voice shaking.

Emeryk’s eyes were red, but his face was dry. “I didn’t. He made that choice for me.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t—”

“Stop apologizing,” he said. “I know you’re hurting too, and you did nothing wrong. Nothing at all. You exist in a way that he can’t accept.”

I took a deep, stuttering breath and nodded. It was going to take a while for me to accept that.
