Jim tried to find a clue as to where the monster had dragged Sherry. He searched for a path, a scrap of material, a blood trail…anything. “Nothing,” he whispered. “It’s like she just vanished into thin air.”

“That’s what I was trying to tell you,” Nick replied. “I was looking in their direction when the tree was thrown at us and when I looked back, she was just gone.”

Jim turned his attention to the other side of the trail and could see where something had been dragged from the rocky road and into the brush. “And that was where they took Frank?”

Nick nodded. “Yeah. Right after they went into the woods, I heard the shotgun fire and then....

“Then the screams,” Adahy finished for him.

Nick nodded solemnly. “I know Frank would have put up a hell of a fight.”

“I’m sure he did.” Jim seemed to slump where he stood. “Fucking Scot had more fight in him than sense.”

“I know he was speaking English, but I swear, half the time I had no clue what he was saying,” Adahy murmured. “I don’t think he liked me very much.”

Jim offered a wan smile. “He liked you kid.” He patted the man’s shoulder as he turned back for the road. “He just had a strange way of showing it.”

“We should head for the highway,” Nick stated, locking eyes with Jim. “It’s our best bet.”

Jim slowly nodded. “Yeah, I’m sure you’re right.” He paused and turned back to look toward the opposite side of the trail. “I’d just like to know what happened with Sherry before we abandon her completely.”

Adahy stepped to the trail where Frank had been dragged away. He pushed through the shallow brush and then stepped back. “I think that was Frank.” Both Jim and Nick turned to stare at him and noted where the young man was pointing. “At least, that’s where they…finished him.”

Jim pushed past him and saw a large circle of stained pine needles, the blood already drying and coagulating. He spotted the shotgun about five yards away and stepped into the shadows of the forest again.

“What are you doing?” Nick whispered loudly.

Jim gripped the shotgun and felt his hands sticking to the stock. He pulled his hand away and wiped Frank’s blood on his trousers. “Shotgun.” He pumped the forestock and ejected four rounds. Picking them up from the forest floor he reloaded the magazine. “Every bit helps.”

Adahy stiffened as Jim stepped back onto the trail. “It doesn’t feel right using a dead man’s gun.”

“Then don’t.” Jim rested the barrel across his shoulder. “I’ll use it. I’ve got no qualms about using Frank’s weapon to cut one of those bastards in half.”

Nick clapped his shoulder as he walked past him. “I doubt Frank would mind a bit.”

Jim chuckled as he fell into step behind him. “Something tells me that old Frank would be tickled if we got one of the bastards with it; especially if we’re lucky enough to shoot the son of a bitch that killed him.”
